PLEASE READ: As some of you may know, I’ve spent the past 11 years trying to unpack how I went from a high-level athlete to complete burnout in less than three years. When I started building Kula.com in 2010, I was in great physical shape, full of energy, and feeling healthy and emotionally fulfilled. Within just a few years, I was 15 kg heavier, had taken up smoking, spent little quality time with my family, and was riddled with anxiety and stress. To make matters worse, my standard 16-hour workdays were not only becoming less productive and effective, but were also having a negative impact on the people in my company – setting a tacit expectation of workaholism that became part of the culture of the business. By early 2013, I had complete burned out and made the gut-wrenching decision to leave the company that I had so lovingly and passionately built. Immediately after selling the business, I moved into the mountains, started to reclaim my health and well-being, and began to process what had happened to me during my entrepreneurial journey. A decade of research, a PhD on neuroentrepreneurship and flow, and over 1000 founder coaching sessions later, this has become my life’s work… to help entrepreneurs and business leaders perform their best and feel great while doing it. Today, I am introducing the culmination of this past decade of work, my first group training on the neuroscience of peak entrepreneurial performance - Neuroentrepreneurship & Flow Essentials. Separate from my founder coaching practice, Neuroentrepreneurship & Flow Essentials is a one-of-a-kind, 16-week training program that distills decades of research, experiments, dialogue, and founder experience into a practical, evidence-based framework designed to help you harness your full entrepreneurial potential. And as someone who went from athlete to entrepreneur to burnout and back again, I know firsthand how being well-equipped for the obstacles of the business world can be a true difference maker. Turns out, it all begins with the brain. I'm fascinated by how people make decisions. I've explored this as a gravity athlete, a strategy consultant, a tech entrepreneur, a PhD scholar, and a startup coach. I also write, podcast, and Dad.
Last week, I had the honor to record a podcast with Dr. Paul Zak researcher, author, entrepreneur, and Director of the Center for Neuroeconomics Studies at Claremont Graduate University. We spent a wonderful hour going deep into the neurological mechanisms behind entrepreneurial behavior, particularly what makes people generous. And what I learned is that there are three primary hormones oxytocin, cortisol, and testosterone that hold they keys to generosity in our economic relationships....
I usually don’t like to start an article by jumping straight into science, but for those who may not understand the key concept in its title, let’s cover a few basics from Neuropsychology 101. We humans have a unique ability to think about the future, make complex plans, and control impulses in ways that other animals can’t. This ability lets us set goals, think creatively, and adapt to new situations, enabling everything from building cities to writing stories. Psychologists call this...
“You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with,” - Jim Rohn This axiom isn’t just motivational fluff. It’s practically gospel in the startup world, where no shit, it’s the people, stupid. Because the company we keep, more than anything, shapes how fast we can learn, the decisions we make, and ultimately, our chances for success. Just ask Sara, a young founder building her first startup. Each day feels like a whirlwind of learning, analysis, and decision-making under...
